BRAKE SERVICE & FLUID MAINTENANCE
Brake
Fluid is the most neglected fluid in the average vehicle. Radiator coolant,
motor oil, and transmissions get far more attention than brake fluid.
Brake fluid specifications had to be improved to provide a dryer product
in order to prevent boiling of the fluid and loss of pedal pressure control.
Over time, moisture seeps into the brake fluid and can be the cause of
corrosion of the inner workings of the system. It is important to flush
the old fluid out of the system at regular service intervals. Many OEM’s
are now recommending this service.
The introduction of front wheel disc brakes in the 1960’s was a
I major milestone in the safe braking control of motor vehicles. Unfortunately,
the engineering of the brake system put the calipers in I close contact
with the rotor and greatly increased the heat transfer to the brake fluid.
The Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) was another milestone in the safe braking
control. Today, almost every new vehicle is equipped with ABS. Unfortunately,
the ABS is not nearly as tolerant of moisture or other contamination.
Contamination, oxidation breakdown and moisture are the most common problems
associated with component failure.
The OEM recognized method is pressure flushing through the I master cylinder,
brake lines and out through the bleeder valves on I each wheel.
This is how we do it for you in our Service Department.
Brake fluid should be checked twice a year and changed every two years
or 30,000 miles. .
